課程概述

Globalization is an outcome and processes of growing interdependence among people, companies, and governments, manifested in mounting cross-border exchanges of goods, services, as well as investments, and free flows of people, capital, technology, and information. The past few centuries have witnessed the fast and growing trend of globalization in our modern societies, bringing forth profound and everlasting influence on human civilization and generating tremendous opportunities and challenges to individuals, companies, and governments around the world. Nevertheless, as happened before in history, public sentiment about globalization has taken a sharp turn in the past few years. The rise and fall of Trump Administration, Brexit, and the surging of nationalism as well as populist parties in Europe, South America, and Asia are all symbols of growing displeasure with the free movement of trade, capital, people, and knowledge. It is accordingly imperative for business and public policy leaders to have a good understanding of the dynamics of global environment and their complicated impacts on individuals, companies, and governments around the globe.

課程目標
This course intends to first examine the dynamics of the global economy environment over the past centuries and to provide a better understanding of the present complexity, and then discuss how global entrepreneurs and multinational enterprises design and carry out innovative approaches for doing international businesses. For the purpose of providing general guideline in particular to international business major students, this course starts with an introduction and discussion of how collegiate international business studies have been designed and studied in major universities, home and abroad, for the past few decades We then decompose the complicated drivers and impacts of globalization processes into three major components, e.g., economic, cultural, and political one, and takes a closer look at each component. Starting with investigating the very basic economic rationale underlying the diverse international business transactions and activities, we then analyze the increasing complexities brought forth by diverse culture, national sovereignty, and international geopolitics in globalization process, and finally discuss how global entrepreneurs and multinational enterprises, among, others, design and implement diverse strategies to do international businesses. This course concludes with an analysis of how all these economic, historical, cultural, and political factors interact to affect the international competitiveness of firms, industries, and countries. In order to provide an in-depth and professional understanding of each subject, several prestigious scholars in the area of history, psychology, and international political economy will be invited as guest speakers in our class. The contents of this course are then organized as follows:

Part I Evolution of International Business Studies
Part II Globalization in Economic Rationale
Part III Globalization in History
Part IV Globalization and National Culture
Part V Globalization and Geopolitics

The class focuses on participant-centered learning. A discussion-oriented class is a partnership in which students and instructor share the responsibilities and power of teaching, and the privilege of learning together. All the students will be allocated into 20 study groups. A study group must evolve from a collection of individuals into a learning community with shared values and common goals. In particular, in order to achieve the expected learning effectiveness, students in this class are required to accomplish the following:

Pre-class
1.Read the materials and do the assignments individually;
2.Participate in study group for the assignments, sharing and revising individual perspectives; and
3.Finalize the group weekly assignment and upload it on CEIBA before the deadline (i.e., 3 pm of the day before class).

In-class
1.Attend every class on time;
2.Active listening and responding, expressing your perspectives and sharing with others.
3.Some basic values for the participation:
-Civility: politeness, openness, and sharing;
-Willingness to take risks: encourage daring and innovation, no sense of fear;
-Appreciation of diversity: in backgrounds, personalities, questions posed,
learning styles, frames of inquiry, and spectrum of interpretations.

Post-class
1.Personal reflections: What impresses you most in this class? Do I learn anything unknown before? How can I reinforce the learning effects, and feed back into my own knowledge system?
2.What can I learn from other students and instructor in particular about the ways of interpersonal communication, as well as the attitudes and skills towards making points and counterpoints in public?
3.List what I can do to improve in the learning process for the next session, and carry them out.

Guest Speech Assignments (Group) 10%
Mid-term Exam 30%
